Greg Westby: Founder and owner
As a kid, woodworking was a chore; a constant obligation that pulled me away from my friends. My dad needed a helper. He didn’t care what I wanted and as an adult, I couldn’t be happier that he didn’t. I chased dreams of becoming various types of artists through high school and college but upon graduating with my BFA, I realized that I wanted to go back to my roots and build things with my hands.
Organically, set building for theater and commercial display fell into my lap and perfectly for a carpenter with an artistic sensibility. I rose up the ranks into design and management for window display, working on some truly massive and spectacular projects. After 14 years of repeatedly burning myself out and feeling the sisyphean and excessively wasteful nature of the industry, I had to escape. I realized I needed to build things that were special, beautiful, and above all, built to last not mere months but decades and perhaps even centuries.
Mount Westby Made is the culmination of my 30 or so years of experience in all manners of fabrication and woodworking. My great pleasure is to design and create beautiful, special, custom works of functional art that my clients can cherish, be proud of, and eventually pass on down through the generations. I truly love doing one-offs and small runs of custom pieces because each new design is an adventure of problem solving. Years of mistakes, failures, and successes have taught me a streamlined process to yield a beautiful final piece, despite having little or no prior experience with a specific process or technique.

Beauty on a budget
Ideally, money is no object, but we all live with some constraints, especially in today’s world. Luckily, in that same world, there are many different ways to build and many different materials to build with. Our extensive knowledge of modern substrates, fabrication techniques, and an arsenal of high efficiency tools and machines allows us to work with you to design something that fits your home and your wallet. Where we work
We have workshops in Brooklyn and in the Southern Tier of New York, near Ithaca, which allows us to serve the tri-state metropolitan area, central New York, New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, and everything in between! Smaller, stand alone objects can be shipped using conventional shipping methods.
How we work
The process starts with your idea - could be a literal napkin sketch or a couple reference photos and an empty space where you hope to put your next hutch, closet, or bookshelf. We work together on the design, tailoring a 3D model to meet your ideal specifications. Then we work through the cost and find the best combination of materials, building techniques, and hardware to meet your budget. Once we nail it all down, the production process begins! To learn more about the process, please visit the How Does it work page.
